Ten days to Christmas and I still haven't finished gift-buying. I'm sure I'm not the only one, though. I don't know what's going on with me this year. Every year I know October's going-ons as well as November's and December's, but for some reason this year they all snuck up on me. Christmas is definitely late. I haven't even told you guys about the advent calendar I made this year.

Anyway, we had to go out and although I bought this cute maxi to wear I didn't find anything I liked to wear with it and none of my necklaces at home were purple. It had to be purple because my king was going to be wearing a purple bow tie and we almost always coordinate. (Sometimes, we simply just can't.) I thought I'd just make something at home but when I got home I realized I ran out of purple polymer clay. (ಠ_ಠ✿)

Because the activity was the next day I had to do some quick brainstorming. I rummaged through my fabric stash and found purple fabric. Then I hunted down some colored punch embroidery thread and caps (and marble type "rocks"). It didn't take me too long which was great because it was way past Little Man's bedtime and he was getting cranky (quite frankly, it was past my bedtime too so I was just as cranky).

Could it have been better made? Sure. I mean, I didn't even bother to iron the fabric. (^ᗨ^✿)

Did I like it? Yup. It was just different and for me, different is always better.

Once I collected what I was going to put inside my necklace, I laid them out in an order that looked good to me.

I took the widest cap and measured how much fabric I would need to cover it completely.
I left an allowance of about half an inch so that I could slip the biggest cap inside without a problem. I used a pencil to mark where the seam allowance fell.

I cut the strip of fabric and sewed about 1/4 an inch in from the edge making a tube of fabric.
Once the fabric was sewn, I turned it inside out (which technically is inside in - if your fabric has a print or a "wrong" side you should sew the strip "right" sided together).

My camera died at this point so I'm going to do my best to describe what I did:

I slipped in the cap that was going to go in the middle of the necklace then knotted the fabric on one side to hold it in place. I took nine lengths of embroidery thread (three lengths of three colors each) and knotted the middle of the lenghts to the open end of the necklace tube. I wrapped one of the ends around the knot and slipped in the next cap.

I brought the threads over this cap and wrapped the threads around the open end tightly. I slipped in another cap and repeated the process.
Once that end was done, I wrapped the threads around the remaining fabric end. I did about an inch and a half of wrapping, trimmed the fabric, and secured the threads to the fabric by hand-sewing a couple of stitches. I left a long tail of thread to tie behind my neck and knotted the end so that it would be easier to tie.

I know with some more time to rummage for interesting shapes to stuff in the necklace and more time to make it, you can make a better necklace. I'd love to see it. Go ahead and make it better and share it with me on Twitter or Instagram @ThatNewMommy. (◕ᴗ◕✿)
