Tomorrow is National Doughnut Donut Day. You thought it was the same thing, didn't you? I did. Turns out it's not. At least that's what I've read. National DONUT Day is in June and National DOUGHNUT Day is in November.
Apparently the one in June is celebrated in honor of "Doughnut Dollies" while the one in November is celebrated in honor of the doughnut itself. The one celebrated tomorrow started on June 7, 1938 when Morgan Pett, a military doctor, helped wounded soldiers and gave them a free doughnut. He only had 8 dozen but after helping Lieutenant General Samuel Geary, Geary began a fundraiser with Pett to give every wounded soldier, as well as the needy, a free doughnut. this was later joined with the Salvation Army who had female volunteers provide doughnuts for the servicemen who referred to them as "Doughnut Dollies". Here's a quick video on them:

Honestly, I'm not completely convinced that tomorrow's day celebrates the Dollies alone. I can't really remember a National Doughnut Day last November, BUT I do you can celebrate tomorrow all over social media and with a free doughnut from participating stores.
Participating Dunkin' Donuts will be giving out a free doughnut (NOT Croissant Donuts or Cheesecake Squares) when you buy a beverage. And Krispy Kreme will be giving out your choice of powdered, filled, or Original glazed doughnut without the need to buy anything (except for you guys in Connecticut. Sorry, homestate). I hope to pass by Krispy Kreme tomorrow. Although, to be honest, at our Krispy Kreme we always get a free doughnut. Since I don't like sugar, they are so awesome that they give me a doughnut right before it hits the glaze. The first time I visited that I told them about not liking sugar, they gave me an unglazed one without a question. It was awesome service. I made sure to write it down in the comment card and speak to the manager about it.
Anyhoo, if buying doughnuts is not your thing, here are ten recipes you can try:
And here are two bonus recipes just in case you want to try something more basic instead:
No matter if you buy, or make, remember to #donutday share with all of us and mention @ThatNewMommy so I can see how you celebrated!
