National Craft Month - Day 30

National Craft Month 2016 is over. (◕︵◕✿) I can't believe I made it. I knew I wasn't going to be able to craft as much as I wanted for this month because of projects I'm working on, but I really did want to share some sort of tutorial with you all for each day, and I did. Go me! February basically sucked when it came to meeting my goals for the month. Yeah, there were a couple of days this month I missed because I unplugged and didn't prepare for it, but I made up for those. March monthly goals? ✔ Done.(◕ᴗ◕✿)

The last National Craft Month video I'll be sharing with you is a tasty one...or so it seems. It's definitely a project to take on in the kitchen. Especially for those with a sweet tooth. The video is from Cupcakes Cookies and Cardio and it teaches you how to make a Coca-Cola shaped cake. The recipe for the cake itself includes Coke, but I think this can work with any flavored cake. The trick is getting a cake that isn't so soft you won't be able to transfer inside to your chocolate soda bottle. not sure what I mean? Check out the video:

National Craft Month - Day 30

Shoes. Love them. Basically all kinds. Mostly Chris Donovan, Irregular Choice kind. Chris Donovan might be described as artistic but Irregular Choice might be described as something else. It's been a thing with me. I remember in high school I was at the shoe store with my mom who was going to buy me a pair for school. I fell in love with some shoes and she just had a face: 'You like THOSE?' "Yeah. They're so ugly, they're cute." And those kind of weird, "ugly" shoes are the ones I like. (^ᗨ^✿) But I also like "normal" pretty ones sometimes. I like bling. I have a pair of clear "stripper" heels. I just love shoes. I'm just more drawn to those that aren't..."normal" looking. (Although, to be honest...different is what I love.)

Anyway, YouTube recommended a DIY Cinderella glass slipper video. I'm not really much Cinderella anything, but her heels were awesome so I decided to give it a look. So cute. I need to show my sister because I'm sure she will hunt down that tape and find everything else to make a pair for herself. I like the video because of the effect the tape gives the shoes. Other Cinderella shoes I've seen are just blinged out making them look like diamond shoes not glass, so NOT Cinderella shoes.

I mostly work with polymer clay but I have also worked with resin to make small items like jewelry. I know some cosplayers use resin to make props but that's at some serious skill level that I'm not even going to try. (◠ᴗ◕✿) I hadn't thought of making other types of large items with resin until today's video.

CraftKlatch is a channel I've shared videos from before and today's video deserves to be shared too. It's mixed media, it's resin, it's lighted, and it's mermaid. How could I NOT share? Mermaids? (^ᗨ^✿)

National Craft Month - ThatNewMommy

Hope you had a fun Easter! My king and I went to our usual Sunday breakfast with his dad who had the day off. We gave him his Easter basket there and he flipped. He had been counting down the days to Easter wanting to do an egg hunt (he saw me buy the eggs) but I don't think he expected an Easter basket. He flipped not so much for the basket but because inside it had a Thomas Rollers 3 pack and some M&Ms. It also had a bag of Thomas Minis which made him flip again. (^ᗨ^✿)

We went home were he found a giant Easter egg I made out of a balloon and newspaper. THAT he really didn't expect and he absolutely loved.  Especially since it had more Thomas Minis hiding inside. After his aunt and cousin arrived, we went down to the park and had our Easter egg hunt. It had rained earlier in the morning but the sun was out. At least long enough for the kids to find their eggs. As we were sitting opening them to see their goodies, a heavy rain started to fall. We ran for the one of the baseball dugouts but by the time we got there, it stopped raining. We decided to just head on home to play and grill some burgers and hot dogs for lunch. My king fell asleep as soon as they left a few hours later. He had a great time. That means I was happy. (◠ᴗ◠✿)

Anyway, that is why today I will be sharing two videos. One for National Craft Month Day 27 and the other for Day 28. I love making fun stuff for my king and I love it even more when he joins in on the fun. These two videos are something you and your little one can do using cardboard boxes. The tutorials are fun to watch and it seems like a fun process. They're from Box Yourself which is a channel dedicated to just that: boxes.

Okay, so I know I said I was done with the notebook tutorials, but technically this isn't one of those...kind of. This is a shopping list cover similar to the notepad tutorial I shared earlier.

This lyriclover810 video is definitely something I want to try out later on because I am always carrying some sort of list. The top of the pad usually gets crumpled as I'm shoving it in and out of my bag so I think this would help. Plus, I think I can make it cute.

I've already done some shopping and I couldn't find any paper I like for the notepad cover, but I found some folders that were nice enough to work. You know, pretty enough to look nice if it comes out right, but not so pretty that I'd be upset if it doesn't come out right. (◠ᴗ◕✿)

National Craft Month - Day 25

Okay, like the Barbie videos, I may have overdone it a little with the notebook tutorials. I promise this will be the last notebook tutorial I'll share with you guys. The thing is that this video tutorial shows you how to make a Nutella-shaped notebook which isn't really "Wow" but it gives you the basics which you can use to shape the notebook into whatever you want.

HelloMaphie shows you how to shape your notebook and basically all you need (besides the notebook of course) is an image of the shape/form you'll glue to the front, a very good cutting blade, and a nail file. (Yes, nail file. You'll see why.)

I have now words for today's National Craft Month video tutorial. Okay, maybe SOME words: ridikulus.

It's another step-by-step for "school stuff". It's a pencil holder this time. Or it can be a brush holder. Crochet needle holder. Doesn't matter. It's just so cute. And actually, no. Maybe "cute" is not the word for it. Fun. Definitely the word for it is fun. At least I think so. Btw, this video is also from FimoKawaiiEmotions which I recommend you subscribe to because it has some really cool videos.

I mentioned being a notebook hoarder the other day and the video for Day 23 of National Craft Month is about revamping...notebooks. I wouldn't do this to any of my cute notebooks because...well, they're cute, BUT I can see this being done to some of those other boring notebooks. (◠ᴗ◕✿)

Today's video comes from FimoKawaiiEmotions. It's a quick video tutorial which shows you how to turn your boring notebook into a neat "liquid" notebook. I think this is something that older kids would enjoy doing (with adult supervision due to the use of cutting tools and iron).

What is this obsession with Barbies? (^ᗨ^✿) OMG. I need to get a handle on it. For National Craft Month I have shared a video for each day and two of them were related to Barbies (or any similar fashion doll really). There was a craft room tutorial and another tute on how to re-root hair. I really wanted to not share any more Barbie videos...but I have one more.

Again from MyFroggyStuff (seriously, subscribe to her channel), this video tutorial shows you how to easily make a gown for your fashion doll. For those non-sewers out there, don't worry this is a no-sew gown. I love it because she shows you how she does it, but with some creativity and folding you can really get that dress to look however you (or your child) want.

My dad passed on his crafting genes to me and I have passed them on to my king. He loves helping mommy any time she is making something and part of our "therapy" sessions (it's what we call our homeschooling) involves crafting. That's why for Day 21 of National Craft Month I wanted to share a video tutorial you can do with your younger loved ones.

This video by ThreadBanger is one of Rob's Man vs Pin(terest) videos, except he uses his niece (so it's a Kid vs Pin video). They take on the challenge of making a glowing bouncy ball. They do a couple of attempts and it really doesn't come out (Pinterest Fail), BUT Rob does the challenge later in the video and he gets something not exactly as at least I thought it would be, but close enough. Confession: I'm a craft supply hoarder. Although, you probably already knew that. So again...confession: I'm an office supply hoarder. (^ᗨ^✿) Specifically notebooks. I'm not quite sure why. Maybe because I like writing? I have no idea, but usually if my partner needs a notebook for whatever reason, he knows I could pull one out of thin air. (Okay, so not technically but you get it.)

And it's not the pretty notebooks either. You know, those cute notebook that catch your eye in the store and you just buy because...because you may need it someday? Sometimes, just regular notebooks. Honestly, I have no clue why and as I'm writing I'm questioning myself: WHY? Anyway, notepads are a whole other thing. I get those when I need them. Maybe buy a pack, use one, and save the rest for whenever. Not really into those because they're just not cute. Until now.

National Craft Month - Day 19
National Craft Month - ThatNewMommy

Today's National Craft Month video is a weekend project. At least, if I were to do it it'd be a weekend project. To be honest, I'm not going to even try it though. No way. I just would not be able to get something even one fourth similar to this done. It's just not possible and I'm okay with it. (^ᗨ^✿)

It's so good we're going straight to it. It's from Carol Held and it's a tile which she has painted with alcohol inks and taken some of it off to form birch trees. I know, right? Sounds like "wha-?" but yeah. I warn you: She has a Bob Ross feel. I don't know about you, but I'm a Bob Ross fan. My king and I still catch him on PBS once in a while. I will never tire of Bob Ross. As soon as this video started, he came to mind. I don't know if that's a good thing or not for you, but it's why I kept watching. Well, that and curiosity. Another warning: this is a step-by-step which is lengthy and a two-parter. But, it's still pretty freaking cool.

The National Craft Month video I shared with you the other day was a step-by-step video on how to make a craft room for a Barbie (or any similar sized fashion doll). It's a cute room which doesn't seem to hard to make. For today's video, I'm sharing something that you can also use with your Barbie. Or correctly said, do to your Barbie.

Again from MyFroggyStuff (btw, you may want to check out the channel and subscribe. I did), this video shows you how you can change your doll's hair. Ok. This is so cool. IF I had seen this when I was little I probably would have done this to all my dolls. (^ᗨ^✿) I mean, I cut the hair of some of those dolls anyway so yeah, I definitely would have done this. I like customization and I think this is why I like this, and the other, videos so much. No need to keep using that "factory-multiple" stuff. (^ᗨ^✿)

Very recently I found out about yupo paper. Honestly although I like crafting, "artsy-art" stuff isn't really something I know about so i hadn't heard about this kind of paper until recently from a YouTube video. As I was looking around YouTube for other yupo paper videos I stumbled upon today's National Craft Month video.

Day 17's video is from Scrapitydoodah. She calls it "playing" and "doodling" but I call it "IDEAS! IDEAS!". (^ᗨ^✿) For scrapbookers, cardmakers, this is a great video. It starts of with alcohol ink blobs but the final result is so different. I just didn't see that result when she started.

In a previous National Craft Month post I mentioned mixed media and shared a video tutorial for a whimsical flower canvas. For Day 16 I have another mixed media video tutorial which shows using different medium, but STILL a pretty cool looking result.

In this video, Gabrielle Pollacco makes a mixed media ATC. She doesn't use an actual card as the canvas but instead makes one out of polymer clay. Then adding beads, chipboard elements, among other things she turns out an awesome Steampunk butterfly ATC.

National Craft Month - Day 15
National Craft Month - ThatNewMommy

I love crafting. I always have. But back when I was little I don't think I did much other than crochet and sew. Then, one day my dad made me a loom and I started using that, too. (Yes, "made". My crafty genes are definitely from my dad). (◕ᴗ◕✿)

Another thing that I loved when I was a little girl, and still do actually, are Barbies. I may be a grown woman but I still like playing with them. And, while I'm mentioning it, I also like Monster High and I am a HUGE Brony. (^ᗨ^✿)

Anyway, the video for National Craft Month Day 15 is from MyFroggyStuff. I mentioned before that I like to create with stuff I have around the house, well this video uses a lot of those things to make a fashion doll-sized craft room. I may make one of these just for the sake of making it.

I love fairy gardens. I think they're just so magical. I don't have one because I just think it would come out SO not magical looking. (^ᗨ^✿)

I've worked with polymer clay before, so I was super excited to see this video from Sandrartes. It's a polymer clay fountain that would look perfect in a fairy garden. She uses polymer clay, resin, and fisihing line to make it. It looks complicated on first look but as she does it step-by-step, it really seems doable.

National Craft Month - Day 13
National Craft Month - ThatNewMommy

Today's National Craft Month video is not one of the ones I've had bookmarked for a while. It's actually one I just recently found but I loved it so much I had to share it with you guys.

One of the medium I use is alcohol ink and lately I wanted to use them on something else but couldn't really figure out what. (They don't sell them around my way so I try not to "experiment" too much because then I'd have to mail-order them and wait...and I'm not that great at waiting.)

So I was watching some videos on YouTube but truth is, they were kind of ho-hum. Then I came across Beetlewing's video. He shows these frames towards the end that I fell in love with. One has a tree and others are robots that OMG. (I have a thing for trees and robots.) (◠ᴗ◕✿)

National Craft Month - Day 12
National Craft Month - ThatNewMommy

When you live in a rented home, sometimes painting walls isn't something you can do. That's when I turn to decorating the walls with things I can easily put up and take down. That way, if I move I don't have to worry much about repainting the walls to make them white again (or sadly, peach in one case and a horrible old mint green in another).

That's why making wall art from fabric is great. You can use any fabric you want (affiliate link) and it's easy to make. In today's video tutorial for National Craft Month, OnlineFabricStore shows you how to make this type of wall art using fabric and canvas stretcher bars (and tools, of course). You don't NEED to use the stretcher bars. I've used pre-made canvases and (when I couldn't find the size I needed) cardboard. It's basically the same technique as shown in the video.

Scrapbooking is not something I do very often but it's still something that I take some joy in doing once in a while. My first time, I didn't like it at all. I found it very tedious and felt like I wasn't going in any type of direction. After a few curse words, I scratched everything, took a small break, and started again. I ended up with a cute page I was pretty proud of.

Since then, I've made a couple of pages (mini, not full page sizes) and I've also made a couple of cards. Although this video tutorial from JK Arts mentions Valentine's Day in the title, it's a cool card with a nice effect that can be adapted to any occasion.

National Craft Month Day 10 and I'm going to share something I recently "discovered". I don't know how I missed this. Being on that mixed media kick to the point that I was "stealing" my king's broken crayons to melt right on the canvases, yet not once did I think about using this one crafting ingredient I have handy for my jewelry-making: resin.

Cloud Watching Arts posted this great video of using resin art to make this sun inspired piece. I absolutely love it and added it to my projects to do list (and I confess it pushed down a couple of things already on the list).

It's been a while since I did any mixed media other than practicing techniques (and making messes). (^ᗨ^✿) I wanted to share this video with you because, although it is on the lengthy side compared to the previous videos I've shared for National Craft Month, the canvas came out adorable. And the way the video runs, it really gets you thinking you can do something similar.

So grab canvas, brushes, acrylic paints, and poster paint markers (and yes, those are affiliate links) and get your art on:

National Craft Month - Day 8
National Craft Month - ThatNewMommy

Have you seen Zootopia yet? It looks like a really cute movie. I had it on my theater-watch list but we still haven't been able to go see it. My king is going to enjoy it so much. Just in case you don't know about it, Zootopia is about this female police officer who is the first rabbit police officer. (Oh yeah, did I mention it's an animated movie about anthropomorphic animals?) She's super excited but they end up making her a traffic cop because she's a rabbit and smaller than the other officers. I'm not sure what happens but she ends up teaming up with a civilian red fox to investigate some abductions going on.

The movie's animation is beautiful (from what I saw in the trailers) so I am really looking forward to watching it. In the movie, she uses a pen in the shape of a carrot which is what inspired today's National Craft Month video from NerdECrafter. (You just GOTTA love that name!)

National Craft Month - Day 6&7
National Craft Month - ThatNewMommy

Sundays is my day to unplug and I completely forgot to set up a National Craft Month post to publish. So, because of that, today I will be posting both Days 6 & 7 which means two video tutorials I will be sharing with you..

I like crafting and I enjoy trying a little bit of everything, but I really haven't tried my hand at soap-making. To be completely honest, I'm not sure if I am too interested in it. It may be I never try. BUT, just in case some day I DO get curious I bookmarked these two tutorials. How could I not? They're soap in food form. I don't eat sweets but it doesn't mean I don't think these are cute. (◕ᴗ◕✿)

My king LOVES chocolate and he LOVES peanut butter so, of course, I LOVE these Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup soap from GlitterForever17. (Btw, what a fun and sad name at the same time: GlitterForever. Yay! Forever17. oh girl.... (^ᗨ^✿) ). Anyway, I couldn't have these within my king's reach though, because I know they would go straight into his mouth.

National Craft Month - Day 5

I've mentioned before I like use things I have around the house to craft. Something I have a lot of is old CDs. I've used the silver film layer in ornaments and jewelry I've made, so using CDs to craft is not really new to me. But, for bugs? Didn't think of that.

I'm not really squirmy when it comes to bugs but it doesn't mean I want them around me either, unless they're these cute bugs. Made with polymer clay, wire, and old CDs, Sandrartes shows us how to make these non-so-creepy crawlers. (◕ᴗ◕✿)

National Craft Month - Day 4
National Craft Month - ThatNewMommy

This is Day 4 of my National Craft Month celebration and for today I am sharing a simple upcycling tutorial from Diorizella Events and Crafts. She uses masking tape and shoe polish to give an empty glass bottle a new look.

This is super cute for those who like a vintage or rustic look, but with a little imagination you can probably give different looks to different bottles. I've been saving some bottles to make a jewelry display but wasn't quite sure how to, or even IF to, decorate the bottles. This video gave me the idea of using this technique but I'll be adding my own twist to it, of course. (◠ᴗ◕✿)

National Craft Month - Day 3
National Craft Month - ThatNewMommy

I love crafting especially when I'm able to create with things I have around the house. And I don't mean my regular craft stash, but ordinary household items I may have (or, in some instances, may need to buy without spending a lot of money). It's one of the reasons I bookmarked this fish tutorial video from CraftKlatch (who, in turn, was inspired by the Enchanted Fish tutorial from Suzy's Artsy-Craftsy Sitcom).

It's such a cute craft and it's made from an aluminum foil cookie sheet. How awesome is that? You can emboss it with things you have around the house and paint it with paints you probably already have (although it's a great excuse for a craft shopping trip). The only thing you MAY need (at least I do) is some sort of primer for the aluminum. You can use spray paint or a special craft primer for metal.

National Craft Month - ThatNewMommy

As I mentioned in my previous post, to celebrate National Craft Month I am going to be sharing some tutorials I've come across on the web. The first project I shared was a video tutorial on how to turn empty plastic soda bottles into rockets for your little king or queen. For National Craft Month Day 2, I am going to be sharing a simple pendant you can make using polymer clay, liquid clay, gloss, an eyepin, and some paint. Of course, you will also need something to hang the pendant from.

I love these new Disney princesses but I was born in the age of the old school ones and, although my favorite is Belle (ummm...book lover...hello?!), I love Ariel. How could I not? She's a mermaid and who has NEVER wanted to be a mermaid? I mean, come on. Madison?!?! (^ᗨ^✿) Madison was THE mermaid. She was the mermaid TO BE. Actually, I think it was BECAUSE of Madison that I watched The Little Mermaid. (Fun note: I think it was because of my dad's not-so-secret crush on Darryl Hannah that I was introduced to Madison.)

National Craft Month - ThatNewMommy

I always seem to remember it's National Craft Month by mid-March. (^ᗨ^✿)  I always want to remember at least in February so I can plan out and do crafts to celebrate the month, but this mind of mine just doesn't work that way. I remembered this year's National Craft Month...today.

National Craft Month was started back in 1994 by the Craft & Hobby Association. Its purpose was to help people learn about crafting and its benefits. If they already knew about these, then it was meant for these people to re-discover how much fun crafting is. It began being celebrated by a few manufacturers and retailers but, today, National Craft Month is celebrated by millions of people celebrating creativity.

I had 3 Cabbage Patch Dolls
The Barbie Doll Evolves - ThatNewMommy

Talking to a little girl I know, she asked me if I knew what a Cabbage Patch was. I was like 'Umm...YEAH!!!! They're awesome! They're from MY days.' (^ᗨ^✿)  She tells me she has one and asks if I had one when I was little. I get nostalgic and tell her I had three: a girl named Althea or something like that and two twin boys whose names I don't remember at all. When I look up, she's just wide-eyed looking at me. I don't know what I said. Was Althea (or whatever her name was) the name of a cousin of hers maybe? I ask her, 'What?' and that adorable little girl returns with a 'You had THREE?!?!?!'

When I got nostalgic I went to my little girl place, but when she gave me that response I snapped back to my adult place...and all I could think of was my dad. I had a little bit of a hard time getting out the word "Yeah". Before I was a mom, I appreciated him. Now that I'm a mom, even more so. When he was around I appreciated and loved everything he did for us, especially because I hated how my mom held us over him. I hope to the universe I showed him my appreciation at least with "thank you" because when he left, I was a teen. They say teens are moody and, as adults, we're supposed to overlook it. I think I was kind of stank that night, so I hope he overlooked it.

Rollercoaster of Emotions at the Maker Faire >
Rollercoaster of Emotions at the Maker Faire - ThatNewMommy

I have always read about the Maker Faire and it's always something I wanted to attend, but there weren't any near me until last year. I was so happy when I found out there was going to be a Mini Maker Faire here in Puerto Rico. I made arrangements as soon as I found out: looked for someone that would give us a ride and made sure to tell my partner so he could ask for the day off from work. I even told my sister about it so she could take my niece. It was such a good time. I was wowed by everything I saw and the kids had fun. Mini Maker Faire Caguas was a win.

When I found out about the Faire, I immediately went to the site to see if I could participate. I emailed the gentleman for more information but honestly I didn't have enough time to make the necessary arrangements: our ride was a small car and I didn't have enough inventory to sell. It was disappointing, but I told myself I would definitely apply as a merchant for the following year.

When their Facebook page made the call for the 2016 Mini Maker Faire, I was so on it. (^ᗨ^✿) First thing was getting BD to take the day off from work. He was so in with the whole idea, he went ahead and took vacation so he could help me prep. Not only did he arrange getting us a ride (yes I know, we REALLY need a car), but we discussed ideas for table set-up (I have never exhibited before), he was my second pair of eyes, he gave second opinions on what I should show, and of course he was going to pay the fee and help out with Little Man. As a matter of fact, I really wasn't sure if I should apply and HE was the one that told me even if I didn't sell anything, considering the fee as advertising at the fair was a good investment. I went ahead, applied and didn't hear from them. In the application process (which mentioned having to pay the fee), I had to send in a photo of my work and a link to my store so I thought maybe they were looking for something a little more "techy" and I wasn't what they wanted. I was slightly bummed but I understood and was okay with it. I was okay with it, until 8 days before the Faire.

Las Fiestas de la calle San Sebastián & Bomba

Bomba & Las Fiestas de la calle San Sebastian - ThatNewMommy

We have the longest Holiday season here in Puerto Rico. Like perhaps many of you, we start our Holidays right after Thanksgiving. Or on Thanksgiving. Or right before it. Let me explain: The Holidays begin with Thanksgiving but, at least in MY house, there is no decorating that day. The next day MAYBE. But most likely, decorations for the Holidays in my home will begin the two days after Thanksgiving. (After all, I need a day to rest from all that food). BUT, for some people, they start right before Thanksgiving to decorate. No offense to any of those but...come on, guys...TOO EARLY. LOL

So that's when our Holidays begin, but did you know they don't end on New Year's Eve? You may think they end on Three Kings Day, but that's not exactly right either. (Although sadly, there are some people that remove decorations by that day or the day before.) After Three Kings Day, we begin Las Octavitas/Octavas which is an 8-day celebration originally used to glorify the three Kings and baby Jesus. Nowadays it's a time when some people return parrandas they were not home for. Las Octavitas/Octavas are ended with Las Fiestas de la calle San Sebastián.
Puerto Rican Holiday Season - ThatNewMommy

Originally organized in the 1950s by a priest of the San José Church (to celebrate Saint Sebastian's feast day, raise funds for the parish, and restore San Sebastián Street), Las Fiestas de la calle San Sebastián (San Sebastián Street Festival) is nowadays mostly known as the celebration that ends the Christmas holiday season. This annual 4-day event is celebrated from Thursday to Sunday and begins with the traditional mass dedicated to Saint Sebastian and includes other traditional festivities such as the "cabezudos" parade, food vendors, artisans, musicians and traditional dancing.

2016 Goals - ThatNewMommy

It's already half a month in and this post should have probably been written sooner but with us still in the Holidays (nope, they're not over yet here), my current projects, me trying to figure out what I can do about N-E-Things, trying to reorganize our home, and just loving my king to death, I finally sat down to get this out. Fun fact: writing more often is a goal I have set for myself.  (◠ᴗ◕✿)

I still have my vision board but need to adjust the goals I had, basically to update them with what has been done and not been done so far but mainly to make sure they reflect my main life goal. In my last post I mentioned Salma Hayek's interview and how I wanted to feel fulfilled. Nothing comes quickly or easily but hopefully little steps towards it will help me reach that.

Not only do I have some personal life goals I'd like to reach this year, but I also have some blogging/writing goals as well. The purpose of this post is to share with you some of these goals I want to work on this year and the blogging/writing goals that are specific to this month. That way you can know what to (hopefully) expect from the blog and other social media I'm on.
